City Hall

In 1883/84, an administrative building in the Neo-Renaissance style was constructed at the corner of Fraumünsterstrasse and Kappelergasse under the direction of city architect Arnold Geiser.

Between 1898 and 1900, ETH professor Gustav Gull expanded Geiser's building into the present-day City Hall. This historicist building combines various stylistic elements: The facade is predominantly Neo-Gothic, although elements from other stylistic periods can also be found. The glass-roofed arcaded courtyard, on the other hand, is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The City Hall presents a soaring facade to the main side, facing the Limmat River. The stepped gable front of the central projection lends the building a monumental quality.
