Embark on an easy 3.1-mile (5.0 km) loop from Birchover, exploring Stanton Moor and its ancient woodlands. This hike, taking about 1 hour and 23 minutes with just 338 feet (103 metres) of elevation gain, offers expansive views across the Peak District countryside. You'll traverse open moorland and broad, accessible paths, encountering distinctive gritstone edges and picturesque scenes of Birchover village. Look out for the famous Nine Ladies Stone Circle, a Bronze Age relic standing proudly on the moor.

This easy route is suitable for all skill and fitness levels, featuring easily accessible paths and typically no steep gradients. Some sections even boast no stiles, making the journey smoother. The trail primarily uses broad paths through fields and woodlands, ensuring a comfortable and straightforward hiking experience.

Stanton Moor is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, rich in archaeological significance with over 70 ancient burial mounds and four Bronze Age stone circles. Beyond the Nine Ladies, you can also discover the Cork Stone, a climbable sandstone boulder, and the Earl Grey Tower, commemorating the 1832 Reform Bill. Near Birchover, the mysterious Rowtor Rocks complex offers intricate carvings and caverns.

Cork Stone

Highlight • Climb

The Cork Stone is one of a number of impressive natural outcrops on Stanton Moor. With steps carved into one side, and a few handles hammered into the top, it's easy to climb the curious chunk of weathered sandstone. Getting down, however, is a little harder.

Stanton Moor Trig Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

Stanton Moor is a majestic area of upland on the edge of the Peak District. With a Bronze Age stone circle at its heart, the moorland is much-celebrated for its connections to ancient spirituality. Furthermore, you get breathtaking views from rocks on the edge of the moor; overlooking Bakewell from one side and Matlock to the other. There’s a great deal of wildlife, too. All in all it’s a magical place to explore and one of my favourite spots in the Peaks.

Nine Ladies Stone Circle

Highlight • Historical Site

This early Bronze Age stone circle is in a beautiful and atmospheric setting. As soon as you walk through the trees, the magic hits you. Legend has it that the circle depicts nine ladies turned to stone as a penalty for dancing on Sunday. There is also a 'fiddler stone' outside the main circle. The fiddler was also supposedly turned to stone for providing the music!

Earl Grey Tower (Reform Tower)

Highlight • Historical Site

This is no hunting tower, this is Earl Grey Tower, also called Reform Tower. It was built to commemorate the Reform Act of 1832, which was introduced by Charles Grey to give more people the right to vote. Such a pity the tower is in such a bad condition! Barn Farm is a friendly campsite in an idyllic Peak District setting. Located on the outskirts of Birchover village — which has a couple of pubs and places for food — and close to the atmospheric Stanton Moor, it is in a great location.
