Today we hiked a 2.2 km gravel path up Himakana Mountain. It's very steep in places, with an incline of about 25%.
But the view from the rocky outcrop is breathtaking.
The effort is worth it.

Today, a fantastic, unique tour to Himakänä in perfect weather! It's a must-do experience. It will stay with us for a long time. The climb was a bit challenging, but no problems. Just enjoy the panoramic view!

Traveling in Norway with the Aida. Of course, there are a few highlights that need to be visited. The path from Hindaråvåg was steep but not difficult. When we got to the top, the weather immediately turned dark. I was able to take a quick look down. But when the weather is nice, there are lots of pictures. A few …

The way up to Himakånå is only a very steep dirt road, but the view on the way and especially at the top is simply fantastic 🥰🥰🥰

Did I mention altitude on yesterday's bike tour? Such nonsense, we had that today on the hike to the Little Troll's Tongue. Well developed path, but 145 NOK parking fee, everyone can have their own opinion.
The view is definitely terrific!

A really great, but very strenuous hike. Two thirds are very steep uphill. Recommended: good hiking shoes, hiking poles, sufficient drinking water, sun protection!

We parked the car in the parking lot of the Joker supermarket in the town of Hinderavag. Paid parking by the way (€ 14). Impossible to park elsewhere. From there it is a 750 meter walk to the starting point of the hike Himakånå (Trolltunga's little sister). A small hike of 6.33 km in total with a height difference of …

Ofte stilte spørsmål

How long does it typically take to complete the hike?

The round trip for the Himakånå Trail usually takes about 2 to 3 hours. The ascent to the rock formation itself can be completed in approximately one hour.

How difficult is the Himakånå Trail?

The trail is classified as 'moderate' by komoot and 'blue' (medium difficulty) within Norway's hiking system. It's suitable for individuals with basic hiking skills and average physical condition. While there are some consistently steep sections, it's generally considered manageable for most people. It is not recommended for strollers or wheelchair users due to the uneven and potentially marshy conditions.

What is the terrain like on the Himakånå Trail?

The trail begins with about 550 meters on an asphalt road, then transitions to a tractor road, an older road, and finally a path. Much of the hike is on a gravel path, which can include relatively steep sections and some marshy areas. You'll traverse through scattered birch forests, bushes, and heather, eventually reaching more exposed terrain. Sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support are recommended due to potentially slippery gravel.

What kind of views can I expect along the route?

The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views, especially from the summit. You'll overlook Lysevatnet lake, the Nedstrandsfjord, and lush green valleys with farms. Expansive vistas to the north, west, and east, including views of the Ryfylke Islands, are also part of the experience. Key viewpoints include the View of Himakånå and the Himakånå Cliff.

What makes the Himakånå Trail unique?

Often called 'Trolltunga's little sister' or 'Mini Trolltunga,' this trail offers similarly spectacular views without the extreme effort or crowds of its more famous counterpart. It provides a chance to experience magnificent Norwegian nature and culture. The Himakånå rock formation itself holds local mythological significance, named after a petrified troll from Norwegian legends.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The trail is best hiked during the warmer months, typically from late spring to early autumn, when conditions are most favorable and the views are clear. Always check the local weather forecast before you go.

Is the Himakånå Trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially in areas where animals may be grazing, and always clean up after your pet.

Are there any permits or fees required to hike the Himakånå Trail?

Where can I park for the Himakånå Trail?

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Nasjonal sykkelrute 1 (Moss–Bergen).

Is this trail suitable for families with children?

While the trail is considered family-friendly and more accessible than some other Norwegian hikes, it does have consistently steep sections and uneven terrain. It's best suited for families with children who have basic hiking experience and are in average physical condition. It is not suitable for strollers.
