Still a long way from the Wachtküppel, it is almost a bit surprising how the small rock spike appears "just like that" in the landscape. The 705m above sea level guard dome is the remains of a volcanic vent whose surrounding softer rock has weathered away. The harder igneous rock of the vent, on the other hand, was preserved.

The 705 meter high Wachtküppel, also known as the "Rascal of the Rhön", is a rocky hill northwest of Gersfeld. It owes its nickname to the fact that the mountain top, the remains of an ancient volcanic vent, peeks out over the plateau like a rascal.
The Wachtküppel is a wonderful mountain with a wonderful view. You can climb it in a short time and from its summit, which also has a high cross, you can look far in all directions of the Rhön.
