Both the blossoming period and the pear harvest attract many visitors to Ruinerwold. These days, the pears are no longer for poor families, but are sold by auction during a pear tree auction. Those present bid on a lot, after which the highest bidder has until midnight of the same day to pick the pears. The next day, the trees are for everyone again.

The hundreds of pear trees are here thanks to the physician of Ruinerwold, Hendrik Larij (Dordrecht 1881 – Ruinerwold 1955). When the road was constructed in 1928, the street was planted with two thousand pear trees on his initiative. The idea behind this was to distribute the pears among the poor people of the local population, so that they would be provided with enough vitamins in this way. The reason the street was named after Larij.

The Bartholomeus Church has defined the landscape south of Ruinerwold for 600 years.

De Wijk is a village in Drenthe with approximately 2,800 inhabitants. In the Middle Ages, farmers settled here along the Reest. In 1325, the monastery moved from Ruinen to Dickninge, which, together with manors such as the Havixhorst, contributed to the development of the village. In the 17th century, the monastery fell into disrepair and part of the area was destroyed during the disaster year. In 1811, De Wijk became an independent municipality. After the Second World War, it expanded considerably and since 1998 it has been part of the municipality of De Wolden.
