Ett under av natur! Efter ett vulkanutbrott för 60 miljoner år sedan drog basaltlavasamman vid avkylning. Krympningen orsakade vertikala spänningssprickor. Genom jämnt drag från alla sidor bildades nästan perfekta sexhörningar när det sprack upp. De cirka 40 000 basaltpelarna (vissa upp till 12 m höga!) är övervägande sexkantiga.
