In early September 1993, my family and I spent two weeks at what was then the Refugee Reception Center in Oisterwijk, on Scheibaan, between two nature reserves: the Kampina and the Oisterwijk Forests and Fens. Our first Dutch shelter, the current Asylum Seekers' Center (AZC), is still there. Changed, but still standing. With a different main entrance, partly intact (with recognizable buildings), partly demolished (our accommodation building has already been demolished), and partly as a new building. A kind security guard (who also served here in September 1993 as an 18-year-old) told me that the AZC, after reconstruction, will be allowed to remain there for over 20 years.

In the Kampina nature reserve near Boxtel stands the striking steel observation tower Tour de Frans, named after conservationist Frans van de Ven. From this tower, you have a panoramic view of the Beerze stream valley, the vast heathland, and the many fens that characterize this landscape. The tower is a striking landmark in the area and offers hikers a unique perspective. The view is particularly spectacular in the summer months, when the heathland turns purple, or in autumn, when the trees and fens transform into warm hues. The Tour de Frans commemorates the dedication of Frans van de Ven, who dedicated many years to preserving nature in this area. His name lives on in this tower, which invites you to pause for a moment and enjoy the beauty of the Kampina.
