Count Walram IV of Nassau-Idstein, son of Count Adolf I of Nassau-Idstein, built the castle around 1390. He died on November 7, 1393, at the age of 40, before his son Adolf II of Nassau-Idstein had the castle completed that same year. He later pawned it to Count Henne von Reifenberg.
From 1439 onward, the castle continued to be mortgaged and used as a retirement home. A cellar account from 1549 proves that it was still inhabited and in good condition.
