An important tributary of the Meuse, with a fast current, historically important for the water pumping stations near Modave, and forms a beautiful natural area with hiking opportunities.

Crossing the Condroz, the Hoyoux rises in Buzin, a village in the municipality of Havelange, at an altitude of almost 300 metres. It then flows through villages and hamlets, over hills and through valleys, before finally flowing into the Meuse at Huy, at an altitude of 70 metres. Built in the Middle Ages, only the keep and a few architectural elements remain from that period. After its partial destruction in the mid-17th century, it was restored and transformed into an elegant pleasure palace. The French-style park and gardens, redesigned in the 19th century, are part of the Parks and Gardens of Wallonia, designated as an exceptional cultural heritage site. Modave Castle is surrounded by a beautiful park, which is part of a 450 hectare nature reserve. You can enjoy the French gardens, the views of the valley, and the walks in the woods.

The castle of Modave is open to the public and offers a visit to more than 25 rooms decorated with beautiful stuccowork, tapestries, paintings and furniture from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. You can also watch a film about the hydraulic wheel that was built in the 17th century to pump water from the Hoyoux. This wheel is attributed to Renkin Sualem, an engineer who was also involved in the construction of the Marly machine, which brought water to the Palace of Versailles.

The castle of Modave is a beautiful castle in the province of Liège, which was built on a rocky outcrop above the Hoyoux valley. The castle has a long and rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was inhabited by several noble families, such as the Counts of Marchin, the Prince Bishops of Liège, and the Cardinals von Fürstenberg. The castle is now owned by VIVAQUA, a water company that uses water from the Hoyoux for the drinking water supply of Brussels.
