Once in the valley, the Igrexa de San Xoán de Portomarín church was dismantled stone by stone in the 1960s and rebuilt at its present location. Reason: The valley was flooded, and is now filled by a water reservoir. But this is not the only thing that makes the structure so special: built in the late Romanesque style, it was designed both as a castle and as a church and therefore has architectural features of both styles.

The Order of San Juan was the owner of the superb church-fortress of San Nicolás, currently San Xoán. Moved from its old location on the banks of the Miño, to the current one, in the center of the new Portomarín, this unique Romanesque temple was built at the end of the 12th century by disciples of Master Mateo.
